Out of the box, the Yojimbo 2 was razor sharp. The broad grooves allow the knife to remain nimble in your grasp. A handle profile with a number of broad finger grooves provides a secure grip. There’s no doubt your blade is locked thanks to a crisp snap as the lock engages. It features Spyderco’s compression lock system, which has a crisp lock up. Opening and closing the folder is smooth. The texturing is very slight but undoubtedly present. One of the things I most often find is over texturing of handles to the point the knife is uncomfortable to use. Sometimes because of new machining technology companies do things they can do and don’t think about whether they should. The texturing for me has that Goldilocks feel to it-just right. Spyderco uses a hollow grind that results in a thin geometry.
With a blade width starting at 1.5 inches, the steep angle still provides a sturdy tip. The blade has a sharp-angle execution of a wharncliffe style, resulting in a very articulated tip. I prefer a small-to-midsized folder because once I get into the large folders, I start asking myself why I didn’t just choose a fixed blade. At 7.55 inches open, it’s in the midsized folder range. It's kicking everything else out of my pocket, and I can highly recommend it for EDC or self-defense.The Yojimbo design has been out for years, but to be truthful I am just getting around to reviewing it now in the Yojimbo 2 iteration. I resent the fact that the knife came with such a crappy clip, forcing me to buy a third-party one, but I love the knife as a whole so much I have a hard time harboring any real negative feelings. I got a Lynch Northwest deep carry clip that has worked beautifully. If you are using your knife, it will be to cut.įurthermore, in my large hands, the handle hardly sticks out at all, so using it that way, inadvisable as it may be, isn't even an option! All it meant for me was that a quarter of the handle would be sticking out of my pocket. I'll go further and say that if you draw your knife in self-defense, the idea of blunt strike "non-lethals" is ridiculous. MJ said he initially wanted that for "non-lethals", but he later saw less value in this idea. That would be the ridiculous amount of handle that sticks out with the stock clip. While it is somewhat wide in the pocket, this is not my complaint with the knife. However, it is still very thin behind the edge due to the aggressive hollow grind, making it an exceptional cutter! The stock is thick, giving the blade enough mass to easily fall shut. The compression lock is very safe and practical and makes for reliable - and fun - one-handed use. The ergonomics are very comfortable and the action is perfect. It's great for opening packages or boxes, zips through plastic or cardboard, and in general performs exceptionally as an EDC. Listening to Michael Janich's reasoning behind each design choice made me realize this was an exceptionally well-thought out tool.ĭespite its intended use, I could clearly recognize the utilitarian value of this knife, and it has certainly lived up to my expectation - and then some - in day to day use.
